Abstract

Title (English)

Perceptible Cultural Aspects in the Kissang Parang Sabil

Abstract (English)

This paper contains my notes on my translation of three Tausug texts of Kissang Parang Sabil: 1) “Kissa hi Umah Kimaraddun,” 2) “Kissa hi Salip Ladjahirun,” and 3) “Kissa hi Panglima Pulahung Hassan.” The three Kissang Parang Sabil texts are collected from the original Tausug language and translated into Filipino. The Kissang Parang Sabil translations reflect how much the Tausug value their beliefs and what they fight for as related to the concepts of agama (religion), bangsa (tribe), and hula (place). Observable likewise is their readiness to offer their lives in the middle of war whenever they feel oppressed and experience cruelty as related to their notions of martabbat (self-respect) and pagbaus (revenge). As a member of the Tausug tribe, I attempt here to describe the beliefs and practices of the Tausug based on the kissa.
